Dostana: The Controversial Movie That Presented Homosexuality In a Quirky Way!

Do you remember the time a massive faction of the Indian society was creeped out by the concept of homosexuality when the movie Dostana hit the box office? You can now watch the movie from movierulz or MovieTube APK using Android. Of course! After all, it highlighted one of the significant taboos rampant in Indian society. However, it’s ironic that it was the same movie who informed most people that the concept of same-sex couples exists. There was a time when most of the people didn’t even know that it was possible for people of the same sex to be attracted to each other! Well, unless Dostana presented it all within three hours in the quirkiest possible way.

As expected, the movie caused a lot of controversies. Because the Indian traditions, cultures, and most of the religions think this as a sin, backlash from the natives was inevitable. Earlier, some not-so-mainstream movies brought the concept of gay lovers. However, nothing could make it up to the mainstream as Dostana did.

The Controversies Ignited From Dostana Still Remain

The majority of the Indian faction believed that homosexuality is a sin. There was a time when same-sex relationships were criminalized. Did you know that a large portion of Indian youngsters can’t even accept their sexual preferences openly? Most of them are afraid of being abandoned by their families. For more than ten years, there has been a relentless struggle for equating the rights of gays and lesbians. Chances are, most grown-ups still blame the movie for bringing the wave of equal rights for homosexuals.

The Fight For LGBT Communities’ Equal Rights

Dostana provided the much necessary courage to the LGBT community of India to come out of the closet and fight for their rights. For a long time, gay people faced threats and harassment just because of the widespread belief that shamed intercourse against nature’s order. Even the law prohibited these kinds of relationships despite mutual consent. The movie sparked jubilation among the LGBT community and made them fight harder for their rights.

When Homosexual Marriages And Relationships Finally Got Legalized!

In 2018, a panel of five judges sat down to discuss whether gay people should have equal rights. Finally, after a relentless struggle of ten years, the wish of the LGBT community was fulfilled. Section 377 legalized gay marriages and relationships. Even though they are few, it is not right to demean them. The movie Dostana portrayed the gay relationship of Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham in a healthy way.

Did Dostana Movie Have a Role To Play In Bringing Equality To The LGBT Community Of India?

Perhaps! Who knows? Without the movie bringing it all into the mainstream, people suffering abuse couldn’t have mustered up the courage to speak up for their rights. In the film, we saw everyone else except Kiran Kher (Abhishek’s mother) accepting the fact about the duo being gay. Even if they were faking it all, it would be a safe assumption that the movie caused a stir in the Indian Society.
